Lessons at Crabtree Lane Studio
Quilting lessons are available at Crabtree Lane Studio, located in Abington, MA. Students receive individual attention in their choice of projects, with special attention to color selection, pattern choice and method of construction. Pat specializes in machine quilting, appliqué, and piecing.

Classes are conveniently available morning and evening. They run in six-week cycles, and class sizes are small.

Choosing a color scheme for your quilt doesn’t have to be a challenge. Learn easy tricks from Pat Delaney, winner of numerous color awards from Vermont Quilt to Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival to The Gathering. We’ll play with fabric and glue and experiment to discover the secrets to successful color choices. We’ll also discuss the importance of value in making your quilts lively and interesting. Non-sewing.

Take a Mock on the Wild Side:
An intro to mock appliqué techniques (sewing workshop)

Mock hand appliqué, a method of machine work, is much faster than hand appliqué, yet it looks nearly identical. We'll explore various shapes and curves, and by the end of the class, we'll end up with a large block suitable for a quilt block or pillow top. Once the technique is mastered, virtually all appliqué designs can be done with heirloom quality by machine.

Learn how to create a personalized, heirloom quilt that celebrates a special person or occasion. Using a strip-pieced watercolor design as our starting point, we'll discuss how to represent the personal memories and treasured stories that you want to preserve. Demonstrations of motif fabrics and photo transfers will be included.

Please bring to class:
Sewing machine—in good working order with user’s guide
Machine needles size 80
¼" foot especially edging foot
Mechanical pencil, notebook

Seam ripper

Large ruler (6" x 18" or 24")
Small ruler (such as 4" square or 3" x 8")
Neutral thread in a tan or grey size 50
Extra fine glass head pins

45" square of batting for design wall
Fabrics — 1/8 yd. or fat quarters
LARGE amount of motif fabrics (smaller scale works best) pertaining to subject
MANY other fabrics for fill. These should be three or more colors each and densely packed. Make sure you have a large amount of lights and darks besides mediums. You can’t have too many! Florals and non-geometric freeforms work well.Tone-on-tone, solids, batiks, and plaids do not. Pre-cut watercolor strips are ok.

Pat Delaney, a machine quilter with awards from Vermont Quilt to Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival to The Gathering, will introduce you to the basic machine-quilting skills that will shift your quilting into high gear! Topics include using stencils, graphic inspirations, freehand techniques, stippled designs, and more.

(Aurifil 50 wt. Cotton or Mettler 50/3 or 60/3)

Claying Around:
Creating unique quilt embellishments

Learn simple effects with polymer clay to create buttons and beads. Polymer clays blend beautifully, so any color can be achieved to match your fabrics exactly. A quick trip to the oven sets the clay permanantly. Non-sewing.

Please bring to class:
Polymer clay—small size packages in various colors, plus black and white. Include basics and any special colors you would like
Various tools to work with such as pieces of wire, toothpicks, bamboo skewer, darning needle, rolling tool, such as a section of pvc pipe(small), plexiglass rod(6 inch), or small rolling pin
Cutting tool—single edge blades available in craft depts
Baby wipes
12" ceramic tile (makes a good work surface) or a sheet of freezer paper (to cover table) and masking tape
Shoe box or plastic container to transport projects
Small sheets of polyester batting to fit box

Optional item:
Dedicated pasta maker not to be used for food
